an interesting piece of culture-anthropology
Accusations of witchcraft from the inquisition in a sense represented the archaic battle between good and evil. Popularity of witchcraft and satanic rites shows, there was quite some rebellion against the officially established clerical structures.
Inquisitors were not the good guys according to my understanding, they pobably very often made false accusations, just in order to defend their own comfortable positions.
There seems to ba a general convention, that hell is the place of various torture-practices, one would rather want to avoid, Torturers thus hardly could be the good guys by any common sense, they rather have their own compartment in hell, representing a repressive hypocritical religious terror-regime.
It's quite doubtful also, that laughing-yoga would scare away the devil, although if you are in a good mood, it's less likely, that repression will subdue you.
Closes with some scientific explanations on the effects of torture and mental disorder in both, victim and offender.

Evreyone Rushes To Call This Art..It's Boring Drivel..!...The First 13 Minutes A Tutorial In Title Cards..Then Actors Finaly Appear...By Then It's Too Late......Audience Has Left The Building....YUCK MUCK......Spare Yourself..!
This is an excellent film. I have no idea why it is classified as "Science Fiction/Horror". It is a DOCUMENTARY. Häxan is such an excellent documentary that it conscientiously cites its references for the various still images and scenarios shown. It is also a feminist film, displaying (for its time) a profound understanding of the tangles belief in (an evil form of) witchcraft produces; and giving new insight into the formula "damned if you do and damned if you don't". Someone here said the link between "modern" (ca. 1922) hysteria and historical witchhunts was incomprehensible, but I feel the analogy was clearly shown. The same curious traits, largely associated with female physiognomy and behavior, which fed the flames of the witch-hunters' madness gave way in the early Twentieth Century to Freudian diagnoses of "hysteria". Both led to the locking-up of women, although the more recent interpretation led less often to their immediate deaths.
I recommend viewers to adjust their screens to black&white (even if there is an historical basis for the tinting/"colourization", it is distracting from the composition and natural contrast of the scenes) and to select almost any classical music in their libraries to play as a background (although I have not heard ALL available DVD soundtracks, the ones I have heard were distracting).
Brilliant. Highly recommended.

good horror movie
i watched it a few days before halloween. it was a bit boring at first, but it becomes more interesting. i just don't understand the parallelism between the past-age witchcraft and modern-day hysteria. they're from very different worlds. still, i generally think it deserves a cult following.
by the way, SlomoG is right. the text is in swedish and not danish. i hope the original danish version still exists.

A Truely Fine Film
Thank-you for this picture. It is good for the sets, props, acting, costumes...so many things. I liked the end where they used "modern psychology" to explain away witchcraft. A good, must see.

Ouch! Haxan my skull! Find Me an Editor!
This film suffers from being waaaaaaay to long. A quick edit couldn't hurt.
That, though, is the only flaw in this film. Watch it and enjoy!

MPEG2 not Better than MPEG4 pound for pound!
" Does anyone know how I can convert an MPEG4 to an MPEG 2 without destroying its quality, or easier still, download this as an MPEG2?
To convert it to MPEG4 use a software by VSO called ConvertXToDVD, it's easy to use. Do a Google search for it. The loss of visual quality from MPEG4 to MEPG2 will be very small, defiantly acceptable. MPEG4 is superior to MPEG2 (about 4 times better) for storage vs content. The visually best viewing moves available on this site are in MPEG4.
This is an excellent film, and an excellent transfer, but the selection of MPEG4 or MPEG4 leaves much to be desired. Does anyone know how I can convert an MPEG4 to an MPEG 2 without destroying its quality, or easier still, download this as an MPEG2?

Haxan, an interesting film.
As I stated interesting. But I must scold IA on
a techinical point. This film is not color but tinted. Tints were used in silent films to express a mood or the case Norferstu to said it for shots of horror or day or night shots.
